The basic theory and terminology for chromatography can be directly related to industrial distillation. The height equivalent to a theoretical plate (HETP) can be directly related to the distance between two plates in an industrial distillation column. The more plates per column or the more equilibration zones, the better the separation. This is also the case in chromatography. The more HETPs, the better the column resolution.
